Reaching for new standards

With Volvo Emission Control (VEC), Volvo Buses is setting new standards for environmentally optimised buses. VEC drastically cuts pollutants from bus engines. Buses with VEC already meet the forthcoming “Euro 4” emission requirements for 2006.

Volvo’s new exhaust filter (VEF) is an important part of the VEC system and reduces the emissions of particulates, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by 80-90 percent, while nitrogen oxide emissions are halved. It meets all existing noise emission requirements and fully replaces the standard silencer.

Alternative Fuels
Volvo also makes buses for alternative fuels and participates in the development of efficient and environmental public transportation systems. Volvo is one of the world's biggest manufacturers of buses for natural gas and biogas, with conventional two-axle buses and articulated buses in the product range.

Buses powered by natural gas
Volvo is among the world's technological leaders when it comes to natural gas engines for buses. These engines are designed for a lean mixture of air and fuel, which gives high efficiency, low combustion temperature and low emissions. In order to reduce the emissions even more, a Volvo natural gas bus is equipped with an oxidising catalytic converter as standard. Volvo's natural gas systems are delivered complete with chassis, tank package, pipes and fixtures, or as a complete bus.
