4/21/2009 European debut of Volvo-branded road machinery

Corporate Communication

With a new compact milling machine on display, as well as compactors, pavers and motor graders, Intermat 2009 will be the first outing at a major European show of Volvo Construction Equipment’s re-branded road machinery range.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is able to offer the complete road building equipment package – from site preparation to final compaction. The Intermat 2009 exhibition will serve as the European debut of Volvo’s newly rebranded road machinery line.

Milling
New at the show is the MW500 utility-class milling machine. It is both compact and maneuverable, making it suited to smaller milling applications such as patching, joints, trenching and close cutting around street and roadway obstructions. The four-wheel unit has a very tight cutting radius of 200 mm, which is comparable to many three-wheel machines on the market. The right-rear support leg and wheel can be swiveled inboard for flush cutting. The 750 mm diameter drum offers a maximum cutting depth of 210 mm with a standard cutting width of approximately 500 mm. A standard feature on the milling machine is the hydraulically raised drum side skirts.

Soil compaction
Volvo CE will display a number of single-drum soil compactors at Intermat 2009. From the smaller soil compactor line will be the SD25D, a 2,562 kg machine. This smaller unit has the ability to move in and out of 1.2 m trenches, making it suited to commercial and residential site development, utility installations, roads, driveways and landscaping jobs. It is available with a clamp-on pad foot.

Also on stand will be the SD115D, from Volvo CE’s line of larger single-drum compactors.

Asphalt compaction
Two Volvo CE tandem vibratory asphalt compactors will also be on stand. The DD14S is a 1,545 kg machine that offers a high vibration frequency. Despite its compactness, it has the same high frequency found in larger models. This offers users high working speeds and improved productivity.

The DD24 meanwhile, is a 2,600 kg unit and has wide-ranging equipment features: two vibration frequencies for compacting different substrates (rare in this machine class); large-capacity water tank for long working cycles; multifunctional display with hour meter, warning and control lights; and a central lifting lug for easier loading.

Paving
On stand will be both wheeled and tracked asphalt pavers from Volvo CE. The ABG 6870 is the largest of the company’s wheeled asphalt pavers. It has the tightest turning radius available in pavers of its size class. This allows for superior maneuverability in a variety of paving applications.

The ABG 7820, a tracked paver from Volvo CE, can lay a mat up to 10 m wide. Volvo tracked pavers are particularly suitable for paving a wide range of materials from wearing course to base courses on most diversified paving contracts. Common applications for Volvo’s ABG line of tracked pavers include: municipal roads, main roads and highways, airfield construction, waste storage areas, asphalt dam and dyke construction, as well as railway track construction.

Grading
Intermat 2009 will feature Volvo CE’s G946 motor grader, a 17,300 kg, 175 kW machine. The G946 is a versatile, six-wheel drive grader – capable of either high speed or very slow final grading all-wheel-drive applications. In AWD mode, the G946 can reach a top speed of 38.1 km/h in 10th gear with the optional 11-speed transmission or as slow and precise as required by using the Creep mode option.
