2009-09-19 Volvo ‘one of the best places to work’ in Brazil

The 150 Best Companies to Work For Guide is considered the most in-depth study of work environments in Brazilian Companies. It has been run for 13 years by Editora Abril, one of Latin America’s largest publishing groups.

Volvo do Brasil was ranked second among large companies and took the third spot overall. This is the fifth time Volvo has received a mention, scoring a Work Satisfaction Index of 90.9. Its work environment quality index was also high, at 90.7 and the people management quality index, which evaluates human resources practices, was 93.6. Volvo is not just a major construction equipment manufacturer in Brazil, but also makes trucks and buses, with over 2,000 employees working at its regional headquarters in Curitiba, in the south of the country.

“This prize is recognition for Volvo’s extensive and ongoing investment program in our staff,” commented Tommy Svensson, president of Volvo do Brasil. “Our people understand that the products we make drive wealth generation for the country and this is a source of pride for them,” agreed Carlos Morassutti, HR and corporate affairs director of Volvo do Brasil.

Got what it takes
All participating companies go through a strict selection process. A group of 15 journalists from the Guide visited 223 companies in 103 cities in the five regions of Brazil, interviewing 4,500 employees and 220 HR managers. After the initial selection, the surveys moves to pre-classification and finishes by classifying the best.

The survey highlighted that Volvo takes continuous professional development seriously. One extract from the guide commented that: ‘At Volvo, investment in this area is intensive and carried out in a number of ways – technology and innovation seminars, workshops and the establishment of cross functional discussion groups’.

The survey also highlighted the investments made in professional qualification and in developing of careers abroad, with a view to enhancing knowledge and gaining experience. At the end of last year Volvo had 45 Brazilians working outside the country.

The survey results show a favorable in-house situation for workers, such as the percentage of employees that approve of their leaders (87.5%), who are satisfied and motivated (91.8%), and who identify with the company (96.2%). “The priority of the human resources area is to preserve the high level of staff motivation and commitment,” concluded Morassutti. “Passion, energy and respect for people – this is Volvo’s secret to being the best place to work.”
