How did you get in contact with Volvo?
I originally come from Portugal, where I studied civil engineering in mechanics. I followed my boyfriend, who is Belgian and I have been living here for two years now. When I arrived here, I was looking for a job, which was not that easy. I had just left the university and I couldn’t speak Dutch. In Volvo Parts they were looking for an engineer who could speak Portuguese and Spanish, which was an excellent opportunity for me.
Why did you choose for Volvo? What attracted you the most?
In the first place I was interested in the job, it was an interesting opportunity. I was also attracted by the Volvo leadership, the way Volvo treats its employees. People feel very comfortable and one's opinion has a value. Volvo puts all those opinions together and turns them into new ideas.
Give a short description of your function, tasks and responsibilities.
I am a trainee for European Manufacturing, in Internal Logistics. I am responsible for internal logistics in the cabin trim project. In July I will start a new challenge as groupleader for Internal Logistics Engineering.
How do you experience working in an industrial environment as a female engineer?
I like to work here. Of course, this is still a “men’s world” but I don’t see any differences between male and female engineers. I’m not treated differently than my male colleagues. The only difference I notice is that female engineers or executives are recognized faster, but that’s because there are less women.
What are the differences between a female engineer and their male colleagues?
In knowledge, there is no difference. I think it’s interesting to work in a mixed group, because you have different points of view. Men and women complement each other. A mixed group is a stronger group. That’s why I think it’s an enrichment to work with people who have different nationalities and different backgrounds. Volvo recognizes the importance of diversity.
Why would you recommend working at Volvo to female engineers?
It’s a great opportunity to work in an industrial environment. It’s a big company and you get a lot of chances to work in different business areas.
What are Volvo’s strong points?
For the employees: you have a lot of opportunities and Volvo has a wonderful way of treating their employees. For the customer: the quality of our products. As a foreigner and as a woman, I think that not all companies would take the chance to recruit me. Volvo has given me this opportunity. At Volvo it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, one's competency is what's most important.
