From 2009 onwards, Volvo will be the title sponsor and co-promoter of the prestigious Volvo World Match Play Championship, which moves to Finca Cortesín in the region of Andalucía in Spain for an initial three-year-period.
Joining forces with leading sports management company IMG, Volvo is the driving force behind some other exciting changes, which involves a ‘Champion’s League’ Playing Format and New Qualification Criteria based on the Official World Golf Rankings and guaranteeing a place in the 16-man line up not only for the highest-ranked golfers on all five continents but also the winner of the Volvo China Open.
As this genuinely global golfing great, which mirrors Volvo’s truly international brand signals a new dawn, the sun is setting on another iconic event as the 2008 Volvo Masters at Valderrama from 30th October – 2nd November will be the 21st and final edition of an event that set golf’s ‘gold standard’ for more than a generation.
“Volvo was very proud to create the Volvo Masters 21-years-ago and it has been an excellent vehicle to satisfy our European golf sponsorship objectives but we are moving with the times and are honoured to become the title sponsor and management/promotional partner of the Volvo World Match Play Championship which is very much on the global stage and better reflects Volvo’s worldwide footprint,” said Per Ericsson, President & Chief Executive Officer, Volvo Event Management.
