Research and development at the Volvo Group relies on the combined expertise from different companies within our organization. By coordinating R&D initiatives as well as general processes and tools across the company, substantial economies of scale are created.
About 50% of the Volvo Group R&D is performed in Sweden and the rest in different locations in Europe, US, Asia, South America.

Any research and development issue which is of strategic nature and of interest to the Group as a whole is coordinated by a global function called Group Issue Board Technology.

The Volvo Group is organized in product-related business areas and supporting business units. This organization permits companies to work closely with their customers while efficiently utilizing Group-wide resources.
The following business units all play important roles in developing new technologies and services:
- Volvo 3P is a project-driven organization right in the centre of product development for our four truck brands.
- Volvo Powertrain coordinates our driveline operations and is responsible for the development and manufacturing of heavy diesel engines, gearbox and drive shafts.
- Volvo Technology is the research and innovation centre within the Volvo Group developing new technologies and new concepts for “hard” and “soft” products and processes in the transportation and automotive industries.
- Volvo Technology Transfer transfers technologies into and out from the Volvo Group, and invests in companies of technical and commercial interest.
- Volvo Information Technology delivers solutions for all segments of the industrial process.
