Awards and engagements

Hereyou will find a selection of the awards and engagements, related to responsible enterprise, that Volvo Group has received or been involved in recently.

The Folksam Index
The 2008 Folksam Index for responsible business enterprise – drawn up by the leading Swedish insurer, Folksam – ranked  the Volvo Group the highest, in terms of the total grade for work with the environment and human rights, among the 259 Swedish listed companies.
Volvo Group was ranked in third place regarding how we handle environmental issues. Once again, the Group was also awarded the distinction “Best in the Industry“ in the category of human rights. Learn more about the Folksam index (in Swedish only).

Volvo Adventure
In partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Volvo operates an international competition for school children in the 13-16 age group. The purpose is to activate young people to get involved and improve their local environment.

Volvo Employees’ Aid Association
Since 1976, Volvo employees have donated nearly SEK 15 M to some 200 projects in developing countries worldwide. This is a non-profit association, as well as being politically and religiously independent, and is open to all employees at the Volvo Group.

Volvo’s Foundations
The Volvo Group has a number of foundations that award scholarships to prominent researchers and organizations to promote research in various spheres.

The Volvo research and education foundations – Assar Gabrielesson’s Foundation and the Volvo Environment Prize Foundation allocated a total of SEK 40.2 M to various scholarships in 2008. Read more at Volvo Research and Educational Foundations website.

The Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF)
VREF is a generic term for four independent foundations. For the millennium the Board of VREF has initiated a new research programme to be funded - Future Urban Transport (FUT). The foundations commonly support the programme by providing funds for research and educational projects.

The Assar Gabrielsson Award
Doctor of Medicine, Jörgen Elgqvist, was named the recipient of the Assar Gabrielsson Award 2009 for his thesis within cancer research at Gothenburg University.

Håkan Frisinger's Scholarship
The Håkan Frisinger Foundation for Transportation Research is awarding its scholarship for 2008 to Associate Professor Pål Börjesson at Lund University. The scholarship, amounting to SEK 250,000, is awarded to Pål Börjesson for his research within the area of systems studies of bioenergy and biofuels, as well as spreading knowledge and cooperation with decision-makers in society and the business community.

Volvo Environment Prize Foundation
Susan Solomon wins the Volvo Environment Prize for 2009 — delivering findings on ozone layer depletion and prominent on the UN climate panel.

Volvo’s President and CEO awarded the Mekanprisma 
On May 5, 2009 Leif Johansson, President and CEO of the Volvo Group, received the Mekanprisma Award at the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Swedish Engineering Industries in Stockholm. The Mekanprisma Award is a prestigous honor awarded to persons who made significant contributions to the Swedish engineering industry.
