Holistic view and interplay – the keys to success

Making CO2-neutral transport a reality requires the active participation of politicians, government agencies, and fuel producers. We need international decisions from politicians and government agencies on at least the EU level to provide uniform fuel standards and long-term, stable regulations. From the fuel producers, we need answers as to when production and distribution can begin.

One aspect of the renewable fuels is that the cultivation of biomass for renewable fuels is done in a way that is sustainable in the long run. It is of great importance because otherwise there is a risk that the positive effects of the fuels could be lost.

The availability of biofuels is another crucial factor. Even with the rapid expansion of the current production resources, availability will be limited for a number of years to come. Therefore, the best and most logical solution in the short term is to mix the available biofuels with today’s fossil fuels.

Volvo Group wants to, and can, take its share of the responsibility for issues relating to impact on the climate by developing engines that can be run on renewable fuels. We have already shown that we can develop vehicles for all of the renewable alternatives that have been discussed here, but development towards carbon dioxide-neutral transport will not happen on its own – and we cannot do it alone.
