Over the past 25 years, emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulates from heavy duty dieselpowered vehicles have been continuously lowered. With the major reductions that will be implemented in the EU by 2012, the expected emission levels will reach what can be seen as long term sustainable levels. Then the air pollution from new diesel engines will be about 100 times lower than they were when the first emissions requirements were introduced in the early 1990s. After that, the vehicle industry’s environmental work will focus even more on cutting fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions to bring about a reduction in climate change.
