Safety can only be developed by experience. Every single one of our safety improvements builds on a detailed knowledge of how accidents really happen and how injuries are caused in real situations.

This knowledge comes from our Accident Research Team which was formed back in 1969. The Team's purpose is to investigate accidents involving Volvo trucks, in which the driver or passenger has been injured. The main goal is to establish why these accidents happen and analyse how they occur.

Particular attention is also paid to accidents between trucks and cars. In addition, the Accident Research Team interviews truck drivers regarding ‘near misses’ – any unsafe situation in which an accident has been narrowly avoided.

With this unique body of experience, stored and compiled in the form of scientific reports, we can set the right safety targets for future Volvo trucks.  And thus ensure that we develop what is really needed.
