History and Background

When Volvo produced its first truck back in the late 1920s, trucks were regarded as a complement to horse-drawn wagons, railway and sea transportation.  Today, the truck has become the primary tool for transporting goods with increasing demands by business and industry for speed, safety and economic viability.  Volvo is the world’s second largest producer of heavy trucks.  We create reliable transport solutions all over the world – with safety and environmental care built into every truck.

Forerunner for the Environment

Volvo has a long tradition of care for environmental issues.  Our first environmental policy was developed as early as 1972 in conjunction with the United Nations first environmental conference.  Since the early 1990s, guardianship of the environment is one of our guiding principles and core values.

Prominence in Safety

As our founders put it, “An automobile carries, and is driven by, people.  Safety is and must be the basic principal in all design work.”  The Volvo Accident Research Team studies how accidents really occur and the cause of injuries.  These details are implemented in our truck design, which is a foundation of our basic safety perspectives in preventing accidents and reducing injuries.

Reliability

Volvo engineers “non-tool” preventative maintenance, conducts continuous materials testing, dealer testing and global parts resourcing to insure reliability and truck uptime.
