In 2010, the EPA will again cut the amount of nitrogen oxides allowed in heavy-duty diesel engine emissions. With the US 2010 regulations in place, the amount of NOx allowed in diesel engine emissions will be reduced more than 90 percent from the limits in place at the end of the last decade.
As with US 2007, Volvo Trucks North America will employ a "total vehicle solution" approach to comply with US 2010. The basis of the VTNA solution will be the 2007 emissions reduction approaches of ultra-low sulfur fuel, high efficiency exhaust gas recirculation (HEGR) and the diesel particulate filer (DPF). To these proven technologies, VTNA will add an advanced exhaust aftertreatment process known as selective catalytic reduction, or SCR.
SCR is widely used in Europe, and VTNA has already logged millions of test miles with SCR-equipped trucks in North America. We're confident that our 2010 solution will achieve the ambitious emissions reductions called for by the EPA, while also providing the power and performance that customers demand from a Volvo truck.
