What is Podcasting & RSS?

Podcasting? What’s that?

Podcasting is a form of audio broadcasting using the Internet. (It takes its name from a combination of “iPod” and broadcasting.) It’s become a popular method of distributing audio or video files over the Internet using RSS syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices (like MP3 players) and personal computers.

What is RSS?

RSS is short for Really Simple Syndication. Web sites offering podcasts publish an RSS feed in a standardized format. Listeners subscribe to a feed (it’s usually free) by clicking an RSS icon in your browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds for new content, and automatically downloads any new programs that it finds. Many popular browsers, such as Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox, have RSS readers built into them.
