Volvo Trucks receives order for 370 Volvo VNs from Knight Transportation
Knight Transportation has placed an order for 370 Volvo VNs equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions control technology. Volvo Trucks North America will begin deliveries of these trucks to the Phoenix-based fleet in April.

When Volvo Trucks launched the world’s strongest series-manufactured truck, the Volvo FH16 700, Tore Aase of Norway quickly placed an order and became the first customer in the world to take delivery of the brand-new model. He has now driven the truck in regular operations for about six months. “I’m delighted with it. It’s possible to maintain a steady, high speed with a full load even on steep gradients,” says Tore Aase, who hauls heavy loads from Stavanger on the demanding, hilly Norwegian west coast.

Volvo Trucks tests methane-diesel trucks together with Swedish customers
In February, Volvo Trucks will be starting field tests of methane-diesel engines. The technology will be tested in commercial operation together with a number of Swedish customers. “We are doing this so as to offer the market a superior combination of environmental properties, energy efficiency, driveability and low maintenance costs,” says Gunnar Ekwall, product manager for Volvo Trucks in the Nordic region.

New test rig simulates a truck’s lifetime in just a few weeks
A truck’s axles are subjected to immense stress and strain every day, year after year. To ensure they are rugged enough to withstand the toughest situations without having to over-dimension them, Volvo Trucks is using an entirely new test rig for wheel axles in its product development. It is the largest of its kind in the world and can handle full-scale tests of axle assemblies up to 32-tonne bogies, making it unique in the truck world.

Volvo Trucks first to run diesel engines on gas in compliance with Euro 5
Volvo Trucks will be the first manufacturer with an efficient diesel engine fuelled by a mixture of methane gas and diesel. The engine meets the strict Euro 5 exhaust emission standards introduced in 2009. Field testing will start in Sweden and the UK in 2010. “This unique technology allows us to combine the advantages of gas with the diesel engine’s high efficiency rating, which is about 30-40 percent superior to that of the spark plug engine,” comments Lars Mårtensson, Environmental Director Volvo Trucks. “As a result, this truck consumes considerably less energy than traditional gas trucks do.”

New function in Dynafleet – automatic downloading of driver times
Volvo Trucks’ web-based system for transport information, Dynafleet, is now being expanded with yet another function designed to make life easier for drivers and haulage companies alike. Tachograph Download ensures that all information from the digital tachograph is automatically transferred via the Internet to the transport manager.
