I-Shift allows you to focus on what's important

I-Shift combines the best characteristics of a manual and automatic transmission and makes the end result into something entirely new. I-Shift is a 12-speed electronically controlled splitter/range gearbox designed for automated gearchanging.

With 12 gears at hand, I-Shift has far more ratios available than a traditional automatic transmission. The advantage is that I-Shift has more close-set ratios and is more fuel-efficient.

In order to drive economically, it is important to exploit the engine’s torque to the very maximum. Simple considerations such as ensuring that the engine always operates within its economy rev band irrespective of whether the focus is on optimising pulling power or speed. In practical terms it is important to always have the right gear engaged, which is not always so simple with a manual gearbox.

However, with the help of advanced program control I-Shift does this automatically. Thanks to the fast-acting gear-changing system, engine torque is maintained even in difficult operating conditions.

Manual gearboxes

Volvo’s manual gearboxes are convenient to operate since the gear lever is vibration-free thanks to cable operation. The gearbox range includes a 9-speed range and 14-speed splitter and range gearboxes, both with and without overdrive. The wide range of ratios means there is high starting traction at the same time as there are ample resources to handle high average speeds. For heavy duty applications the 14-speed is available with an overdrive top gear.
