Brakes

  • Electronically controlled Brake System (EBS)
  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
  • Z-cam brakes
  • Auxiliary brakes, Volvo Engine Brake and/or gearbox retarder

More effect when braking

The braking system for most long-haul models includes state-of-the-art electronically controlled EBS disc brakes with ESP as an option, some construction and heavy haulage vehicles feature tried and tested Z-cam brakes.

These alternatives can be supplemented with particularly effective auxiliary brakes, such as Volvo Engine Brake (VEB/VEB+) and a retarder.

EBS is a disc-brake system that electronically controls braking effect. There are many advantages to having disc brakes with electronic control via the truck's own electrical system.

The Z-cam brake is used primarily on trucks with leaf spring suspension and is a drum brake design with ABS.

  • Compact retarder – integrated with I-Shift and manual gearboxes. Total braking effect with retarder depends on engine type and whether an engine brake is specified
  • The Volvo has a choice of very effective engine brake options VEB or VEB+

Volvo Engine Brake

The patented Volvo Engine Brake (VEB/VEB+) produces higher braking effect compared with its predecessors. There is also the EPG exhaust brake for the D9B, D11B, D13A and D13B.
