Christian Abelsson

Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering. University of Southampton (UK), ESTACA (France) and University of Linköping.

I was born in Vänersborg in 1981 and grew up in Trollhättan. My first real contact with Volvo Aero took place during an internship while I was studying at University of Linköping. I applied for a job in the Aerothermodynamics department where I ended up staying for seven months. These seven months gave me a very positive view of Volvo Aero, its personnel and the industry in whole. It felt natural to apply for another internship after my semester in ESTACA (L'École Supérieure des Techniques Aéronautiques et de Construction Automobile) where I studied advanced vehicle systems.

After my two semesters at University of Southampton I once again applied to Volvo Aero, this time for doing my master thesis, in the Turbines & Rotors department. The task was to develop a blade design system for supersonic turbines. It was a very interesting master thesis where I got to apply my knowledge from my higher education as well as to apply new knowledge gained at the company during the thesis.

During my thesis I applied to the graduate program. Why? Well, I strongly enjoyed my first 1.5 years at the company due to its warm atmosphere, the challenging tasks, the employment policy and all the nice people I got to know.

In writing moment I have been in the program for about three months and I learn new things every day. The first three weeks were devoted to the shop floor where I worked with a production team in the rocket nozzle department.

After that I chose to work eight weeks in the purchase department which was a completely new field for me, hence very educational. My task was to identify, list and rank saving potentials in attaching parts in two large engine components. At the moment I am doing my third period where I am working on improving our relationship with our subsidiaries.

After these three months I am very satisfied with the company, the job, the tasks and with the people I have met. The program offers a unique opportunity to shape your own day and future. It is free for us trainees to choose our tasks and departments among the great variation of proposals that we are presented. No day resembles the other. One thing remains the same though… we are well received in every department we end up in. I am looking into the future in eager expectation and the four month period abroad, ending the program, will probably be the most memorable time.
