Shafts must be able to withstand severe loads and torques. The slender, hollow shafts are intricately machined. Precision manufacturing of Low Pressure Turbine Shafts for a number of turbofan engines is an important area of specialisation at Volvo Aero and we have delivered more than 5,000 turbine shafts for military and commercial engine programs. The shaft manufacturing shop is equipped with state-of-the-art lathes and grinders for external and internal machining. Shot peening can be performed in hard-to-reach areas such as the bores of deep holes only 2.5 mm in diameter.

Our inspection equipment includes a wide range of precision measuring systems and specially designed tools. Static and dynamic run-out inspection machines, involute surface inspection devices and CMM's meet our customers’ demanding specifications for shaft and hub quality.
